DESCRIPTION
& APPLICATIONS
|
Zinc
is a lustrous bluish-white metallic element in
Group IIb (transition metals or d-block elements)
of the periodic table; atomic number 30, atomic
mass 65.38, melting point ca 419.58 C, boiling point
ca 907 C, specific gravity 7.133 g/cm3 valence
+2. It react with water and reacts violently with
acids, alkalies, sulfur, halogenated hydrocarbons
and many other substances. It is a brittle at room
temperature but malleable when heated to 110
C - 150 C. It is used principally for galvanizing
and/or sherardizing iron, steel and other metals
- coating them with zinc to to protect from corrosion.
It is also important in the production of alloys
such as brass and solder in the preparation of certain
alloys, such as babbitt metal, brass, German silver,
and sometimes bronze. It is used for the negative
plates in certain electric batteries and for roofing
and gutters in building construction. zinc dust,
a finely divided zinc particles having wide surface,
is used as an anticorrosive pigment in paint primer
for galvanized iron and other metal substrates.
